Translation plays a pivotal role in a multifaceted cultural system where linguistic and extralinguistic factors collaborate in shaping cultural products. This perspective regards translation as a form of “rewriting”, involving the intricate process of transforming a text from the source language to the target language while considering linguistic and cultural aspects. Translation can significantly contribute to innovating the target culture by introducing new ideas adapted to its specific ideological context, thereby aligning with André Lefevere’s translation theory. Recent translations of contemporary Chinese literature, notably “The Sound of Salt Forming” (“Aud cum se formează sarea”), represent not mere textual equivalents but exercises in “rewriting” and cultural dissemination. These translations offer a valuable opportunity to explore post-eighties Chinese culture, distinct due to significant societal shifts like industrialization, consumerism, internet impact, and global pop culture.
