Traditional and modern in Romanian libraries and library science education

The article explores the balance between traditional and modern aspects in Romanian libraries and library science education, emphasizing the importance of adapting these institutions to contemporary demands. It analyses the transition from traditional libraries, characterized by printed collections and basic services, to hybrid ones that integrate modern technologies for information management and dissemination. The study includes an assessment of municipal and county libraries, highlighting significant discrepancies in infrastructure and modernization. Additionally, the university curricula of library science programs are examined, revealing a blend of traditional and modern courses necessary for training future professionals capable of addressing current challenges. The conclusions suggest that the development of libraries and higher education requires both financial and administrative support, as well as investments in the professional skills of librarians.
