Synopsis

This analysis surveys the debate on the study of ancient history unfolding in eighteenth-century France in the intellectual circles associated with l’Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. It sheds light on the movement away from historical skepticism and antiquarianism towards a method that became increasingly hospitable to myth and literary sources and a truly philosophical understanding of history.
