This study explores the formative stage of Mircea Martin’s career as a literary critic by examining the relationship between affirmation and difference across various levels of critical discourse. It revisits the notion of the “sovereignty of choice” articulated in the introductory note to his first volume, questioning whether a more fundamental critical option underlies his early work. Through an analysis of literary reviews published between 1966 and 1969, whether later included in Generație și creație (Generation and Creation) or not, the article argues that these texts reveal the emergence of a distinctive critical vision and an original mode of literary interpretation that would shape Mircea Martin’s subsequent critical practice.
