Synopsis

From the second half of the 18th century through the 19th century, a convergence of socio-political and ethno-linguistic solidarities emerged across Europe, giving rise to what is commonly known as national consciousness. This development occurred against a historical backdrop marked by the decline of previously significant primary solidarities—such as those based on religious affiliation, territory, region, or village community. At the same time, instilling national consciousness among the masses required sustained educational efforts by intellectual elites. Through schools, the press, communication systems, and compulsory military service, society eroded earlier forms of solidarity, forcing them to retreat in the face of national solidarity. Ideas defining the specific identity of the national entity thus became firmly embedded in the collective consciousness, highlighting the noble origins, antiquity, and virtues of the people, their role in the world, and the primacy of devotion to the homeland. Furthermore, as modern nationalisms evolved into mass phenomena, they acquired the power to drive historical change. Their deep penetration into society, coupled with the contemporary advancement of cultural communication—which increasingly imposed elements of a "shared culture" across all social strata—explains the enduring nature of national consciousness; to this day, it remains the primary means by which most people define their identity.
