Synopsis

Written evidence from the Middle Ages shows the existence of the future subjunctive in both Spanish and Portuguese. However, currently, Spanish speakers have stopped using this verbal form. Considering these observations, we can highlight several questions: first, how, why, and when did the future subjunctive disappear
from Spanish? And second, what were the contexts of use of this verb tense in both languages and what other tenses replaced it in Spanish throughout the language's evolution process? Furthermore, it is known that the future subjunctive did not exist per se in Latin, but it resulted from other verb tenses of that mother tongue. So, of equal interest is to investigate why the future subjunctive was only used in Spanish and Portuguese, but never existed in the other Romance languages.
