Synopsis
This study examines film adaptations of celebrated literary works as a defining feature of contemporary culture and a significant point of intersection between literature and cinema. Focusing on the adaptation of Tatiana Niculescu Bran’s Spovedanie la Tanacu (Confession at Tanacu) into Cristian Mungiu’s award-winning film Beyond the Hills, the article explores the transformation of a real-life tragedy into both literary and cinematic narratives. The study analyzes the historical events that inspired the book, the context in which the novel was adapted for the screen, the construction of the plot and characters, the creative challenges involved in the adaptation process, audience reception, and the film’s impact on the book’s circulation. Through this case study, the article highlights the role of literary adaptations in promoting reading, expanding audiences, and preserving cultural heritage by offering new interpretive perspectives through cinema.
