Comunismul românesc în benzile desenate și romanele grafice contemporane

This study examines contemporary Romanian comics as a distinctive form of cultural memory through which the communist past is revisited and reinterpreted. While memoirs, diaries, fiction, and cinema have long dominated representations of Romanian communism, graphic narratives remain an understudied medium despite their growing cultural significance. The article explores the narrative and visual strategies employed by recent comic book authors, many of whom experienced the final years of the communist regime as children or adolescents and frequently adopt a child’s perspective to reconstruct everyday life under dictatorship. It also analyzes the predominantly anti-communist discourse conveyed through these works, the representation of historical actors and events, and the intended readership. By situating contemporary Romanian comics within broader debates on cultural memory and literary representation, the study argues that graphic narratives constitute an important medium for understanding and transmitting the experience of communism to new generations.
