Synopsis

For Ion Agârbiceanu, the period between the publication of the short story (or micronovel) Răbojul Sfântului Petre in 1934 and the novel Sectarii in 1938 is marked by a growing despair, following his disillusionment with politics (he had served two terms as a parliamentarian) and with activist journalism (for almost a decade he was director of the newspaper Patria). His frustration with political instability and ideological fickleness led him, in the 1930s, to step down and reorient himself toward the ecclesiastical sphere, where he contributed numerous religious brochures to the „Astra” Library. As a therapeutic response to the trauma of participating in the degrading daily life of politics, political themes permeated his work during the second half of the interwar period, appearing in their distorted and dissolute forms: politicism and sectarianism.
