Synopsis

Since its founding in 1906, Viața românească magazine has aimed to be a centre of influence, debate, and promotion of ideas. In Reunified Romania, new frameworks and political protagonists redefined concepts and the idea of the centre. This paper analyses the historical and literary context of the relocation of the editorial office from Iași to Bucharest and the transfer of critical authority from the tutelary figure of G. Ibrăileanu to the younger leadership of G. Călinescu and Mihai Ralea.
We trace the reconfiguration of the journal’s profile from a “literary and scientific magazine” to a “magazine of literature, art, and ideology,” as well as the reception of this generational shift, as reflected in the press of the early 1930s, through the critical perspectives articulated by Pompiliu Constantinescu, Mihail Sebastian, Ion Călugăru, and Liviu Rebreanu.
