Synopsis

Romanian is a consistent pro-drop discourse-configurational language. The null subject and zero anaphora/thetic judgements across extended text fragments (foregrounding the event and backgrounding the arguments) are the by-default option. Person and number morphemes that mark the verb-subject agreement identify the implicit subject, while high context dependency of Romanian culture favors referents recovery based on speakers’ shared knowledge in case of ambiguity. The marked option for the pronominal subject, either pre- or postverbal, is constrained by a few syntactic rules but several pragmadiscursive principles. The syntactic rules that restrict pronominal subjects are the consequences of the semantic or of the information structure of sentences, or they are driven by other modules of grammar (such as question/imperative/subjunctive formation in Romanian).
