Repere privind „chestiunea pâinii” în presa și memorialistica din România (1885–1935)

This study examines the central role of bread as the staple food of Romania’s urban population during the modern and interwar periods, covering both the Old Kingdom and the territories incorporated after 1918. As a result, the production, distribution, and consumption of bread became recurring topics in the Romanian press, attracting the attention of some of the period’s most prominent journalists, who addressed issues such as manufacturing conditions, pricing, product quality, and public supply. Although newspaper articles have often been regarded as a minor literary genre, they constitute valuable historical sources that reflect contemporary social concerns and public opinion. Focusing on significant events—including the Bucharest bakers’ strikes of 1909 and 1923 and the bread tax introduced in 1931–1932—the study analyzes how these developments were represented and interpreted in the press of the time.
